The Mid West Emerging Sports Leaders Program is back for 2026
After the incredible response to last year's program, we're doing it again. The Mid West Emerging Sports Leaders Program is officially back for 2026, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome the next group of young athletes through the door.
what is it exactly?
This is an eight-week program designed to help young athletes grow as leaders, not just on the field, but off it too. Think less "motivational poster quotes" and more real skills you can actually use: goal setting, emotional awareness, mindfulness, self-reflection, and understanding what leadership actually looks like in practice.
It's run in partnership with the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, which means this is a quality program backed by people who care about youth sport in our region. The program will featuring sessions led by Harry Taylor Consulting (HT7), Community, Respect and Equality, Sport4All, Stephen Michael Foundation and more.
Who's it for?
MWAS Athletes: 10 spots
Wider community: 10 spots
That's 20 places total across MWAS athletes and young people from the broader community. The program kicks off in Week 6 of Term 2, 2026.
Athletes must be born in 2010 or 2011 and based in the Mid West.
If you're a young athlete who plays hard, shows up for your teammates, and wants to understand more about what it means to lead, this is for you.
Tips for a standout application
The selection panel doesn't know you - yet. That means your application needs to do the talking. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you're writing yours:
Know your why
What's actually driving you to apply? Get clear on that before you write a single word.
Use real examples
Back up everything you say with moments from your actual sporting experience. Vague claims won't cut it, specific stories will.
Write as yourself
The panel wants to hear your voice, not a polished essay. Be genuine as it stands out more than you think.
Check it before you send
Get a trusted adult to read it over. Fresh eyes catch things you won't (and don't forget spell check!!)
Ready to put your hand up?
Places are limited to 20, so don't sit on this one. If you're a young athlete in the Mid West who's ready to challenge yourself and grow as a leader, we'd love to see your application.
Program starts Week 6, Term 2, 2026
