Eligibility criteria

The Mid West Academy of Sport (MWAS) exists to support and develop talented athletes from the Mid West region of Western Australia who are on a pathway to state or national representation.

To be eligible for a MWAS scholarship, athletes must meet a number of criteria that reflect their commitment, potential and connection to the region. While meeting these requirements is important, selection remains at the discretion of MWAS and may consider additional factors such as remote-area status, emerging performance or sport-specific endorsement.

Eligibility criteria

  1. The athlete must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

  2. The athlete must currently reside in the Mid West region of WA (or attend school/training in the region) or otherwise satisfy MWAS’s regional residency rules.

  3. The athlete must be competing – or preparing to compete – at a state or national level in their sport or have been endorsed by their State Sporting Association (SSA) or national body as being on a high-performance pathway.

  4. The athlete must be of a designated age range (12-18 years) as defined by MWAS for the scholarship period.

  5. The athlete must demonstrate the dedication, discipline, and capacity for training, education and personal development that align with MWAS’s mission to nurture sporting excellence.

  6. If applicable, the athlete’s sport must be recognised by MWAS as part of the scholarship program (i.e., any sport supported by MWAS or endorsed by the relevant SSA).

  7. The athlete must commit to meeting MWAS requirements for attendance, training, behaviour, education sessions, and agreed monitoring or mentoring programs.

Ineligibility considerations

  • Athletes who are already fully supported by higher performance programs or professional contracts (i.e., receiving substantial external support) may not be eligible for the MWAS scholarship program.

  • Athletes who fail to meet the commitment requirements of the scholarship program may forfeit their eligibility.

  • Eligibility criteria may be modified at MWAS’s discretion, and selection decisions by the MWAS Board are final with no appeals process.
