A Big Moment for Geraldton Softball and MWAS Athlete Dean Garland
Dean Garland, Beau Watts and Jy Thurston (MWAS Alumni)
We love seeing local talent go all the way and MWAS athlete Dean Garland is doing exactly that.
Dean has been selected in the 2026 Australian U14 Men's Softball team, a fantastic achievement that reflects years of consistent, dedicated work in the sport.
The selection didn't come out of nowhere. Dean, alongside fellow Geraldton junior Beau Watts, was part of the WA team that claimed the national title at the 2026 U14 Boys' Softball Championships in Canberra earlier this year. The event was held alongside the Open Men's National Championship meaning these young players were performing on one of the biggest stages junior softball has to offer. Dean clearly made his mark.
National selection at this level is the result of years of quiet, consistent work - early mornings, long training sessions, and showing up week after week regardless of the result. It's the kind of commitment that doesn't always make headlines, but it's exactly what earns opportunities like this one.
For the Geraldton region, it's a proud moment. The Mid West Academy of Sport exists to bridge the gap between regional talent and elite pathways, and Dean's journey is a great example of that mission playing out in real terms.
Congratulations Dean, the whole Mid West is behind you. 👏
