Our Scholarship Program

MWAS was created because Mid West athletes have previously not been provided with the best possible opportunity to reach their potential. Some families have departed the region and some athletes have quit their sport. The Mid West Academy of Sport Inc (MWAS) is open to all sports and operates in close collaboration with sport associations to provide service-based and development-based scholarships.

Scholarships and programs include:

Athlete Scholarships – Valued at close to $10,000 – Includes technical / tactical coaching, sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, nutrition advice, career and education guidance and sports psychology. Athletes from all sports are eligible for a scholarship, so long as they meet the selection criteria.

Coaching Scholarships – MWAS evaluates the competencies of the coach and then creates a professional development plan that suits their requirements. Coaches also receive guidance from the MWAS, a mentor and the MWAS service providers such as sports science. Coaches selected will be part of the Coaching Development Program. The MWAS Coaching Development Program (CDP) provides leadership, feedback, coordination and guidance to MWAS coaches and to coaches that are aspiring to become a MWAS level coach. By developing coaches throughout our communities, the future number and the level of MWAS athletes will rise and the coaching pathways will be strengthened.

Officiating Scholarships – Officials on scholarship receive the necessary support to develop and implement a professional development plan. They also receive guidance from a mentor.

The MWAS operates across the Mid West region comprising 18 local governments; namely the City of Greater Geraldton (includes Mullewa) and Shires of Carnamah, Chapman Valley, Coorow, Cue, Irwin, Meekatharra, Mingenew, Morawa, Mount Magnet, Murchison, Northampton, Perenjori, Sandstone, Three Springs, Wiluna and Yalgoo.
